Painting has always been a constant meditative practice for James. His early work was influenced by the Young British Artists of his college days, with abstraction, collage and found objects, playing key roles in his art making.
Lately, his love of paint is providing an even greater flame of inspiration, offering solace, newfound comfort, and inner peace.
Recent works find inspiration and subject matter in rural Australia, with ideas of colonisation, isolation, quietness, memories, solitude, and a momentary view - leaving, belonging, and returning. Recent work represents a mission to unlock ‘the essence of place’ in a way that is somehow extra-visual, retaining a sense of landscape, under a textural application of colour.
