Art Pharmacy was engaged by Laing O’Rourke as part of Transport for NSW’s Transport Access Program upgrade, to enhance the commuter experience at St Peters Station through thoughtfully curated public art.
This project transforms the station environment into a space where art reflects the unique identity of the local community, adding cultural depth and visual engagement to the daily commute. The installation encourages travellers to experience the station as a place of connection and reflection, aligning with the broader objectives of the program to enrich public spaces across NSW.
The artwork has been designed as a cohesive heritage interpretive piece, consisting of a colourful and dynamic wall mural placed at the entrance of the station.
The concept, ‘Bridging Moments’, created by Inner West Sydney mural artist Kim Siew reflects the evolving environment of St Peters Station, blending historical elements with a figurative artistic approach. It highlights the role of public transport in nurturing community connection through the use of geometric shapes, figures, and patterns inspired by key architectural features like the footbridge, stairs, and platforms.
The mural depicts daily interactions on the platform, embedding heritage details into the figures and their clothing. The screen design reflects the station’s architecture and rail patterns through geometric shapes. A heritage-inspired colour palette connects the artwork to the station and its surroundings, enhancing the sense of place and experience.
‘Bridging Moments’ exemplifies how art curation and placemaking can transform public spaces into meaningful and vibrant environments that reflect the culture, values and needs of a community. The artwork not only preserves the station’s historical heritage but also strengthens community identity, fostering an uplifting transport hub that bridges the past, present and future iterations of the local community.
