Art Pharmacy were invited to curate and facilitate a seasonal art activation in Central Park Mall, Chippendale.
The art activation was to be inspired by the Australian Summer and the soon-opening Fortress Sydney, which is projected to be the largest gaming and entertainment venue in the Southern Hemisphere.
With a primary objective to activate Central Park Mall’s iconic outdoor dining precinct on the Lower Ground Floor, Art Pharmacy proposed the art narrative ‘Main Character Summer’, which characterised the Australian Summer as a time for new beginnings and embracing all that our country’s unique natural environment has to offer.
Through this narrative, Art Pharmacy implemented values of vibrancy, energy and diversity, to add a bright and welcoming element to the location while encouraging passersby to embrace their individual identities.
The selected artist, Robin Clare, brought her background as one of the leading proponents of Jamaican visual culture to the development of this three-part art installation. Consisting of a colourful installation on the iconic outdoor staircase, pavement decals and three light sculptures, Clare’s artwork ‘We Got The Moves’ celebrates individuality and emphasises that everyone has a place and a story to share.
When creating this artwork, Clare had audience interaction as her focus, “Everyone deserves to be the main character of a video game, and feel like they belong within their surroundings”.
The final result was a vibrant, energetic and holistic art installation that brought the artist’s ideas to life, with an inspiring narrative that stretched from down the main outdoor staircase into the outdoor dining precinct. The vinyl artworks activated the walkway, turning it into a runway for the general public, punctuated by the refreshing and dynamic colours of the lightbox installations.
Art Pharmacy is excited to see how this activation will transform the space throughout its lifetime!
