Digital artworks were printed onto vinyl skins and installed onto 56 Signal Boxes across various Inner City suburbs including Kings Cross, Newtown, Rockdale, Neutral Bay/North Sydney, Camperdown, Central and Redfern.
Art Pharmacy Consulting were approached by Lendlease Tyco Joint Venture to decorate Roads and Maritime Service (RMS) signal boxes across Sydney’s inner suburbs. The first round of this project was to cover 56 signal boxes in a printed vinyl wrap. The aim of this project was to brighten up the boxes, and avoid damage and graffiti by putting something aesthetically pleasing into the public space.
We sourced five local Sydney artists with a diverse range of artistic styles and cultural backgrounds. Each of the five artists were assigned 8 to 13 boxes. Their digital artworks were printed onto vinyl skins and then installed onto the boxes. Some of the boxes were installed over night as lanes of traffic needed to be closed, while others were installed during the day. The boxes can take up to 4 hours to fully install.
Claudia Chinyere Akole
Claudia Chinyere Akole is an illustrator, cartoonist, designer, and animator based in Sydney, Australia. She’s an art hag who bleeds pink — and a notorious crybaby with work that tends to cover cultural identity, loneliness, abstraction, and mental health. Her visual signature is comprised of bold block colour and abstract line work rendered by hand predominantly in paint and marker mediums.
Rachel Peck
Rachel Peck is predominantly an illustrator from Port Macquarie Australia, she is also trained in graphic design, studying at Billy Blue College of Design
Rachel’s work has a bold and playful approach usually focusing on objects, food and patterns. She has a penchant for pastels and thick line work. She sights her inspirations as children’s themes, cartoons and 80’s nostalgia.
Daniel Gray-Barnett
Daniel Gray-Barnett is an illustrator and children’s book author based in the Huon Valley, Tasmania. Self-taught, he studied Medical Science at the University of Sydney before swapping his microscope for pencils when he realised illustration had a much lower patient mortality rate.
His illustrations have been commissioned by clients such as The New York Times, Sydney Opera House, The Boston Globe, Warner Music, and The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. His work has been shown internationally and has been recognised by the Society of Illustrators NY, Communication Arts and the Children’s Book Council of Australia. Through these pieces, he aims to explore our relationships with nature and the environments around us.
Kris Andrew Small
Sydney Based Artist & Designer Kris Andrew Small’s idiosyncratic collection of work ranges from lucid abstract pieces & photo based collage, to fervent textural pieces and kinetic type based works. Kris’ work is hard to define and often the result of multiple influences. “I guess a lot of my work comes from my childhood, growing up in the 90s in a tropical part of Australia was pretty colourful and flamboyant, that has always really stuck in my brain.” These early influences are clear across Kris’ portfolio and help to connect the dots and to define his energetic aesthetic.
Chris Yee
Chris Yee, initially majoring in textiles design, is a Ryde (Sydney) based Artist, working Illustrator, Designer & Animator specialising in traditional “pen and paper” methodologies.
He believes in the power of character and storytelling and is heavily drawn to constructing narratives ranging from the humorous to the monstrous and macabre. Inspired by Comics, Wrestling, K-pop, punk and 2000’s rap – it is the Hyperreal and grey area within these genres, the blurring believability between reality and fiction that he finds most engaging.
Growing up in 90’s Ryde, amongst the strong communities of Eastwood he is a proud member of the evolving Asian-Australian Creative identity. He strongly believes there is a unique character and original narrative found within this changing community.
